PZ Svirce Plavac Hvar 2019

750 ml Bottle

PZ Svirce is a wine cooperative with 220 members on Hvar, one of the biggest Croatian islands in the Adriatic Sea. The wine is produced from a single grape variety, the famous and most important grape of Dalmatia: the Plavac Mali. This grape originated from the extinct Croatian grape Crljenak Kastelanski that is genetically identical to the California Zinfandel. Plavac Mali produces rich, flavorful wines with high alcohol content (up to 17%) and a lot of tannins. Flavors and aromas of blackberries, dark cherries, pepper and herbs often characterize the wines. The Plavac of PZ Svirce is not too strong or heavy, but still rich in exceptional Plavac aromas. The wine reflects the timeless soul of the island, the warm sun and cool Croatian Adriatic.

A top wine of 2021 selected by our wine department. It’s tempting to think of Croatian wines being grown in fog-shrouded vineyards beneath brooding castles, but on the island of Hvar in the Adriatic the sun shines on the vineyards and ripe, rich fruit is the happy result. This rich, concentrated red wine should be served alongside roast meats and fish, grilled vegetables and hard cheeses. Think of Napa power and a touch of oak, meeting up with old world earth and woodsy flavors. - Jeremy
