I announce, with trembling pleasure, the appearance of a great gin. Islay Scotch distillery Bruichladdich's gin project has yielded a fantastic entrant in the surging crowd of new-wave gins. However, while one might lump it in with the other so-called New Western Gins and their (sometimes too precious) flavors of rose, cardamom, grains of paradise and the like, The Botanist draws its heart from one well-known ingredient: J U N I P E R! It's style is London dry all the way, with a clear focus on classic, martini-friendly juniper. Except this juniper is foraged for on the island, along with 21 additional botanicals native to Islay, all of which serve to reinforce a classicist approach to gin flavor and style.
