Description:
Savoie is an Alpine region in eastern France neighboring Switzerland. Even though there are 1,725 hectares are under vine in the Savoie, two-thirds of which are white, very little of its wine is found outside of the region as it is mostly consumed locally, given the region's popularity as both a winter and summer vacation destination. Abymes, one of the 17crus within the appellation, comes from the French word “abimé” which means broken and refers to the two-inch, sierra-colored, broken stones from mountain (the Alps) avalanches. The grape planted at Domaine Labbé Jacquère is Jacqueres. Think of it as a theoretical blend of Pinot Grigio with hints of Gewürztraminer and Muscat. It is very bright and floral. Although it is bone dry, the fruit gives a suggestion of sweetness. Domaine Labbe is a family affair founded in 1975 and now run by Alexandra and Jérome. Comprised of 10 hectares, of which 6 ha are 30 years old, Domaine Labbé is located 15km south of Chambéry, a village famous for Vermouth and cheese. Vinification is modern with indigenous yeasts in non-reactive tanks and foudres. Yields are controlled by de-budding vines in the spring. This labor intensive practice is rare to find at this price point. Grass grows in the rows between the vines to fertilize and oxygenate the soil - this practice also forces the vines' root systems to go deeper for nourishment and soak up the terroir of the subsoil.
