Description:
Domaine du Pélican purchased this Grand Curoulet plot in 2012 from Jean-Marc Brignot. Before Brignot, it belonged to Robert Aviet, a well-known name in Arbois and among Jura wine lovers. Grand Curoulet is one of the best terroirs in Arbois. It is a north-facing plot, located on the side of a hill overlooking Arbois and the Saône plain. Grand Curoulet is known for being the place where the first Arbois vines were planted. We replanted the hillside in 2015 with the Savagnin (two thirds) and Chardonnay (one third) grape varieties. Grand Curoulet is a terroir that is ideally suited to Savagnin. The soil is composed of gray marls (about half of the plot) and variegated marls (green and red “wine lees”) from the Triassic geological period – the oldest and highest quality marls. Due to its northerly and windy orientation, Grand Curoulet generally ripens later than the other terroirs of Domaine du Pélican. There is a lot of energy in this deep and very long-lasting wine. The gray and variegated marls partly explain this beautiful minerality of our Grand Curoulet Savagnin Ouillé. The harvest is lightly crushed before being pressed and fermentation takes place in tuns and barrels. A third of the harvest macerates with the skins overnight before being pressed. Aging continues in 500 liter barrels, without new oak. With its reputation and its aptitude for Savagnin, our Grand Curoulet deserved individual vinification of Savagnin Ouillé. He has established himself as the most accomplished non-oxidative Savagnin at Domaine du Pélican.
